A friend gifted me a beautiful package of vintage ephemera. I find it funny that the one piece I was sure that I would never find a use for became the centerpiece of this card, the 1880 Angels.

Products used:

  • 1880 Angels, fussy cut
  • Green “laurel” stems
  • markers
  • matte medium – used to glue down all the items
  • Inktense – “bark” to create the shadows
  • scrap book page (to paint with the salmon acrylic paint)
  • Stamps and ink
    • black and brown – Stazon
    • Diamond background stamp
    • label stamp – “Remember” handwritten on
  • Acrylic paint – beige, salmon
  • Gellyroll pen – black
  • pigma micron archival ink pen

While I had fun, not sure I will do another one of these soon. Hope you enjoy!

#52CafeCards Week 21

Week 21’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was U – Unity. Oops, somehow I screwed it up. I created U for Unique.

Unique by kimberhew

Not sure how it happened but . . . I decided I loved my Unique card, and I don’t want to create another.

I almost threw the card away during the creative process. Then I decided to try something radical. It worked. I love it!

Those are real orchid petals glued onto the card. Again another first, I have wanted to try using items from nature on my projects. I also tried matte medium for the first time.

Fun and horrible project. I started with watercolor paper using matte medium glued a layer of different kinds of papers, using pink, salmon, and light teal acrylic paints with a piece of drywall mesh to create texture and color. The third layer ruined it, Stazon ink and a defective stamp not centered. I tried many things to fix it. No luck.

Channeling Bob Ross, I wanted to give it one more try. So before throwing the card out, I decided to paint it black. The matte medium created a unique surface. I decided to remove some of the black with a wet one, loved the distressed black layer. I had a dried out orchid bloom from my mom laying around my craft table. Viola!

I love it.

Hope you enjoy it!

#52CafeCards Week 20/T – Teal

Week ’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was T – Teal. Inspired by my recent purchase of Beautiful Faces by Jane Davenport, I tried to recreate her lady with teal hair. My version:Lena with teal hair kimberhew doe eyes blog

In a previous post, I felt it was important to show you our failures. However, this time I decided to show that some failures are an opportunity to try a new skill, in this case, digital editing.

Below is the the other “eye” design. While I was editing I also decided to play with saturation and hues. Fun, Fun!Lena with orangel hair kimberhew angry eyes blog

And these last two appeal to my inner scifi storyteller, I may have to write their stories.

#52Cafecards Week 19 – S

Week 19’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was S- Spring.

Spring is my second favorite time of the year. Fall is my favorite. I have always grown Daffodils until we moved into this house five years ago. It’s a long story. Secretly, I can’t wait to move, but I digress.

On watercolor paper cut into playing card size, I started by using watercolor paints to color the general shape and location of the daffodils. Using gel pen and Jane Davenport’s Paint Over Pen white pen, I outlined and completed this card.

Goodbye Spring 2017(in the Northern Hemisphere)!

Hello Summer!

#52CafeCards Week 18 – R

Week 18’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was R – Rocks and Roses.

Home Sweet Home kimberhew blog signed.jpg

The double weeks are harder for me to come up with a cohesive theme. So, I searched Bing Images and found a brick/block home with climbing roses. I have always loved the look rock houses. Thus the inspiration for this painting.

On watercolor paper, I used Elegant Writer to sketch in the house and windows and Inktense pencils for the roses, grass, sky and tree. I love the house and roses. The rest? Meh!

Love playing with the Elegant Writer!

Home Sweet Home!

#52CafeCards Week 17 – Q

IMG_20170529_222039

Week 17’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was Q – Quote. Here are bubbles that I referred to during last week’s post, Peace. I found a quote I think it works really nicely with them for this week’s challenge.

“The ancestor of every action is thought.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Even in the simple action of blowing bubbles, you must have thought ahead to have the equipment available. After deciding where to blow the bubbles, then the action follows.

“The ancestor of every action is thought.” it’s a good quote for us to realize that we need to think about our actions and not act before contemplating the consequences of our actions.

Our world today is the most reactive I have ever seen. It’s a scary time to be alive. There have been a lot of those in history. As a fan of the Star Trek optimism, it feels like we are going backwards instead of forwards.

Be thoughtful,

Kimberhew

#52CafeCard Week 16 P – Peace

IMG_20170529_222253

Week 16’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was P – Peace.

Peace for me is very personal and faith-filled, However, I have chosen to keep that private.

So, I painted one of my calmest relaxing things to do. Blowing bubbles. However, I wanted a quote to go with it. Week 17 is Q-Quote, the only perk to being behind.

My daughter’s best friend graduated last week. and I got her a great card with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. When I researched the internet for the quote I found three that I really love.

The one for peace is “Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. – Ralph Waldo Emerson.” We have to search and initiate Peace. I felt that the bubbles imagery didn’t fit this quote.

I bought a new art tool, Jane Davenport’s Inkredible Pen. While practicing I wrote the above phrase onto a piece of watercolor, decorating it with Distress Inks, Viva Decor and Stazon Ink.

Peace,

Kimberhew

#52Cafecards Week 15/O – Obsession

IMG_20170518_013718

I just finished the card for week 15. Week 15’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was 0 – Obsession. While I had been posting the a few weeks behind. I got behind creating. I had a weekend off and hoped to get some time to work on my art, writing, poetry, and blog. Some creating done however not what I needed for here. There is always hope.

Artistically speaking, I am embarrassed by this creation. It was rushed and looks it. I couldn’t find my cards so I used a manila envelope cut down to size. I didn’t dry it enough or wait for it to dry after gluing on the magazine. It just went down hill from there. Sorry! I debated about making another and never letting this one see the light of day, but sometimes being vulnerable with our failures as well as our success helps us grow as people and artist.

This weeks topic obsession is one I didn’t want to face. I have more of obsessions than I care to admit. When I sat down, the truth crept into my creation. While this isn’t one of my favorite creations, I do feel that as much as I hate to face it, I am obsessed with my weight. Desperately trying to loose fifty pounds again.

What is your obsession? Are you in control or the obsession?

Pondering,

Kimberhew

#52CafeCards Week 13

IMG_20170419_215040.jpgMy life is so busy right now. Trying to find time to create these cards and blogging about them constitutes almost all my free time.

But I love both. Thank you for checking in on my blog. I am no longer ahead in the creation of these cards and just waiting to post. I am behind on both, hoping that my schedule will open up allowing me to catch up.

Week 13’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was M – Me. This was a hard one for me. As I stated above my life is out-of-control. So, this card is about my faith carrying me.

Blessings,

Kimberhew

#52CafeCards Week 12

IMG_20170327_184911

Week 12’s Mixed Media Altered Playing Card Challenge presented by Maremi’s Creative Cafe on Facebook was L – Lace. Oh no! What I am going to do do? Do I even have any lace in the house?

Looking around my house, I spied a small amount hanging from the collar of a dress, my latest thrift store find. The lace in places had become detached and I planned on removing it. Yeah, I could recycle.

Now for a theme, I’m not a lacy kind of “girl” anymore. I saw all kinds of neat wedding dress themed cards on our group. Some had lace stamps creating neat backgrounds.  What to do???

When I scoured my house for lace, I found an envelope with old photos from my mother-in-law. I have been wanting to create a piece with old photos. So, I sat at my desk and ran with it. No old photos were harmed in the creation. I used a copy 😉

This piece ended up feeling very special as my mother-in-law is in failing health and she loved it.

Hug your loved ones,

Kimberhew
